The US State Department, in its annual report on global terrorism, has named Iran the leading state sponsor of terrorism that reaches nearly every continent. From fundraising networks in West Africa, weapons depots in South America, and activity across Western countries, the state “has no reservations about using [terrorism] on any continent…Iran remains the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and is responsible for intensifying multiple conflicts and undermining US interests in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Bahrain, Afghanistan, and Lebanon,” reported the State’s coordinator for Counterterrorism. Iran was added to the US list of State sponsors of terrorism in 1984, where it remains alongside North Korea, Syria, and Sudan.
