The Hajj, a journey to the Kaaba in Mecca required by all able Muslims during their lifetime as one of the five pillars of Islam, is one of the world’s largest gatherings every year. Saudi Arabia has announced that over 2 million Muslims would be taking part this year. The kingdom has invested billions of dollars into hajj-related infrastructure and security measures as threats from al-Qaida and local IS groups continue alongside travel risks such as stampedes that killed over 2,400 people in 2015.
