The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has cited reports indicating that China is holding up to 1 million Muslim Uighurs in “something resembling a massive internment camp, shrouded in secrecy.” The Western Chinese region of Xinjiang is the size of Alaska and among the most strictly policed areas in the world, with complex systems in place to monitor activity down to extreme levels of detail. These “re-education camps” are part of Jinxing’s “strike first” policy against Islamist extremism after a number of attacks in 2013 and 2014.
