A recent polls measured 42% of Germans in favor of U.S. troop withdrawal from their country, with 37% in favor of continued troop presence and 21% undecided. Trump has continued to criticize Germany for not contributing its fair share towards defense spending within NATO, but polls of this nature reveal that the political will for increased spending is also lacking among German voters, as well as their politicians. The poll found that 75% of Germans are opposed the 2% GDP benchmark for defense spending, while 35% also oppose Germany’s current increases to 1.5% of GDP by 2025.
