After multiple days of negotiations with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, North Korea has indicated a difficult road ahead for denuclearization by dismissing U.S. demands as “gangster-like.” Pompeo announced the achievement of a number of commitments for additional discussions before North Korean state news announced that they led to a “dangerous phase that might rattle our willingness for denuclearization that had been firm.” With North Korea backpedaling, escalatory language from Trump and the U.S. may return relations to their previous levels of tension.
