Chinese agents have used carefully crafted fake social media profiles to recruit members of the Bundestag to provide “analysis” in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars, according to a German newspaper report. These MPs would then be invited to China, where they would be accessible to electronic access and bugging, which could provide additional avenues to apply pressure on the individual. Germany has already warned of the danger Chinese espionage poses to its economic sector, and it comes as little surprise that similar efforts are being made in the political realm. The Chinese Prime Minister and a number of other ministers are traveling to Berlin on Monday, where the question of China’s economic and political espionage may be discussed.
