Quebec’s premier objected to a proposal to remove a crucifix from the provincial legislature as part of an effort to be more accomodating to minorities, arguing that the Christian icon is part of the province’s history. Premier Jean Charest on Thursday rejected the proposal, one of 37 recommendations from a commission that he had formed to look into ethnic tensions in the French-speaking Canadian province.
