Poland said on Thursday it would send 1,000 new troops to join its existing 100-strong contingent in Afghanistan in response to NATO calls for reinforcements to step up the fight against Taliban insurgents. The European Union’s largest former communist state was the first to commit more troops after NATO defence chiefs agreed over the weekend that they needed to add to the existing 20,000-strong force in the country.
