More Asian nations are expected to join efforts to quell political and ethnic violence in East Timor, Australia’s Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has said. “I would be reasonably confident that we will see other nations choosing to join the coalition of support,” Nelson told national radio after attending a regional security summit in Singapore over the weekend. Nelson declined to name any of the countries that might send troops. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to specifically identify particular countries. It’s entirely a matter for the East Timorese Government.” Asian countries considering sending peacekeepers would also want the deployment to be endorsed by the United Nations, Nelson said. Full Story
