Violence between the Hamas-led government and rival Fatah forces threatened to explode Monday after suspected militants tried to assassinate another ally of President Mahmoud Abbas, the second such attempt in as many days. Abbas, meanwhile, re-established contacts with Israel’s leadership Sunday at a conference in Egypt. The Palestinian president, also the Fatah leader, called on both sides to do everything possible to avoid violence and said he would open talks with Hamas later this week to end the dangerous power struggle.
