Sir Ian Blair, London’s police chief, is on Monday expected to warn in New York that Britain faces the continuing threat of terrorist attack, influenced from abroad but carried out by home-grown terrorists. The threat to the west from global terrorism and the links forged by law enforcement and intelligence agencies to try to deal with it will be the theme of his lecture to the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City. A previous lecture to the same organisation in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks by Robert S. Mueller, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, boasted that the US had “taken the fight to al-Qaeda” and “taken into custody more than 3,000 al-Qaeda leaders and foot soldiers worldwide”.
