Federal agencies could receive $1.14 billion to improve border security through the fiscal 2006 Defense Department appropriations budget, according to a group of Republican senators. The Senate will vote on the bill this week. The money would pay for law enforcement communications systems and information technology upgrades, but the bulk of the funds are earmarked for vehicle replacement, air fleet modernization and construction of new facilities and other infrastructure for the Customs and Border Protection bureau.
