The State Department is easing an 18-month ban on U.S. officials traveling to Gaza in order to prepare for Israel’s planned withdrawal from the area, The ban was imposed to protect American diplomats from violence. And it remains in effect generally, spokesman Adam Ereli said Thursday. But he also noted that on Tuesday, James Wolfensohn, the former World Bank president who is trying to promote Palestinian development, went to Gaza. The spokesman said that Gen. William Ward, who is promoting reforms in the Palestinian military and security coperation between Israel and the Palestinians, also had permission to travel to the area. Full Story
