A Turkish court sentenced Muslim extremist Metin Kaplan, alias “The Caliph of Cologne”, to life in prison for plotting to overthrow Turkey’s strictly secular system. Announcing the verdict, judge Metin Cetinbas said Kaplan and his Cologne-based extremist group were “terrorists”. “Terrorism, whoever commits it and for whatever reason, is a crime against humanity,” Cetinbas said. Kaplan’s lawyer said they would appeal the verdict, which he denounced as unfair. “We were expecting this verdict. A fair verdict would have been an exception,” attorney Husnu Tuna told reporters outside the courtroom. Full Story
