Togo faced a political crisis following the death of president Gnassingbe Eyadema, Africa’s longest-serving leader, as the armed forces filled the power vacuum with his son in what the African Union denounced as a “coup d’etat”. Eyadema, who died Saturday at the age of 69 en route to France for emergency treatment, was one of the last of a breed of post-independence leaders in Africa. The handover of power to his son Faure Eyadema, 39, was announced on national television by armed forces chief of staff General Zakari Nandja late Saturday, setting the stage for a constitutional showdown with the opposition. “The armed forces (FAT) have been confronted with the fact that there is a total power vacuum,” Nandja read in a live television broadcast.
