Human Rights Watch warned of a stepped-up child recruitment drive by Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tigers in the wake of the tsunami that inflicted substantial casualties on the rebel force. The New York-based watchdog cited estimates that between 700 and 2,000 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) soldiers had been killed in the devastation. “As the LTTE seeks to rebuild its forces after the tsunami, children are at enormous risk,” said Jo Becker, children’s rights advocacy director for Human Rights Watch. “Children have always been targeted, but children who have lost their homes or families from the tsunami now are even more susceptible to LTTE recruitment,” Becker said.
