Over the past several months, many WAR Reports have issued analyses regarding the topic of border security. It is a highly controversial topic and a high priority for DHS and law enforcement. Technology, once again, will play a huge part in these efforts. The architecture being considered will help with passing through border check points, aiding security, and enhancing the travel process.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff encourages this technology at issue, a wallet sized biometric card. ??we ought to try to be building an architecture where one card can do a number of different things for somebody so you don?t have to carry 10 cards,? stated Chertoff. The card currently under debate is known as PASS (People Access Security Service). It would not be required for use until 2007, but officials hope to start issuing PASS cards by the end of 2006. The card would meet post-9/11 requirements that US residents produce their passports to re-enter from Mexico and Canada by the end of 2007. Presently, citizens of the US only need to produce a driver?s license or certificate of birth to prove nationality. However, the proposal mandates that Canadians and Mexicans still require passports or other security identification documents to enter the US.
