Researchers with Cyberbit recently detected cryptojacking malware infections on over half of all computing systems at an undisclosed international airport in Europe. Cryptojacking refers to the illegitimate use of a system’s resourcing powers for mining cryptocurrency. In this case, the malware was mining Monero cryptocurrency.
The malware had made its way onto the systems despite the fact that all workstations were running an “industry-standard antivirus.” Cyberbit believes the malware may have been present on the systems for months before it was discovered. The cryptojacking malware did not have any disruptive effects on airport operations, but it did put extra strain on the systems and led to a rise in power consumption.
