Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei recently announced that the company would license “the entire Huawei 5G platform to any American company that wants to manufacture it and install it and operate it—completely independent of Huawei.” The offer would allow a buyer “perpetual access” to Huawei’s 5G source code, allowing a full scope review for any potential backdoors.
By offering its code to evaluation, it becomes almost impossible for the U.S. to claim there are secret backdoors buried inside. For Huawei, this is an attempt to prove that the narrative about the company’s abilities to spy on behalf of the Chinese government were politically motivated and not rooted in facts.
