In a move that intends to make it more difficult for terrorist organizations like Islamic State to secure funding for their operations, the United Nations (UN) Security Council has made terrorism financing a major crime across the globe by unanimously adopting a binding resolution on the issue.
Under the resolutions, countries must “ensure that their domestic laws and regulations establish [terror financing as] serious criminal offenses.” Countries found in violation of the resolution can be subjected to sanctions.
