The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has issued a warning about “an ongoing and significant risk” to the Domain Name System (DNS), which plays a key role in determining that web traffic is directed to the correct destinations on the internet. According to ICANN, the threat takes the from of powerful, targeted cyberattacks. ICANN CTO David Conrad warned that the attackers “are going after the internet infrastructure itself,” adding that “[t]here have been targeted attacks in the past, but nothing like this.”
The ICANN warning mimics an emergency directive issued but the US Department of Homeland Security last month that warned Federal agencies about DNS attacks.
