In an attempt to thwart the advance of Saudi-led forces in the civil war in Yemen, Houthi fighters have laid over one million land mines. Since the Yemeni population does not exceed 30 million citizens, this represents the highest concentration of landmines in a single country since World War II.
For the Houthis, the effort has so far been successful in terms of preventing the Saudi-led coalition with its superior military resources from overwhelming them. However, close to 1,000 civilians have been killed by the unmarked explosives, while thousands have been injured. In an attempt to get rid of the mines, the Saudi-led coalition is ordering untrained soldiers to clear the explosives.
