Russia and the U.S. have failed to come to an agreement surrounding the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). The U.S. and its allies have long accused Russia of breaking the treaty with its Novator 9M729 missile, accusations that Russia has denied. With this diplomatic failure between the two countries, the U.S. will likely end limits as early as early as Saturday on its intermediate-range nuclear arsenal previously banned by the treaty. While the lack of Russian adherence to the treaty was longstanding, Chinese development of such missiles (the country was not a part of the INF agreement) led to a capabilities gap and provided a more pressing reason for the U.S. to call out Russian practices.
