The U.S. military is requesting funds for a high-tech missile defense radar in Hawaii to provide improved alerts to interceptors in Alaska able to shoot down missiles aimed at Hawaii and the mainland U.S. over the Pacific Ocean. U.S. missile defense systems, both ocean and land-based have received extra attention in the past year as U.S.-North Korea tensions centered around improved North Korean nuclear missile capabilities. Officials have stressed that the threat from North Korea and others still remains in spite of the recent meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-Un.
