Brazil’s main ports are still not in compliance with new world maritime anti-terror laws due to bureaucratic red-tape, a government official said on Friday. The stringent security standards, known as the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code, went into effect July 1 and countries not complying with it could find ships leaving their ports barred from the United States. “It’s not really a matter of compliance by the ports but more a problem of red tape in processing documentation,” Paulo de Tarso Carneiro, director of the department of ports at Brazil’s Transport Ministry, told Reuters.
