A local leader of the armed Palestinian faction, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, was shot dead by Israeli troops near the northern West Bank town of Jenin, Palestinian and Israeli sources said. Thirty-year-old Mohammed Obeid was killed as he tried to evade arrest after being stopped in his car on the outskirts of the village of Anza, Israeli military sources said. Palestinian security sources and witnesses said that he had been shot on a side road after being pulled over in his four-wheel drive vehicle. An unnamed 25-year-old man who was also a member of the Brigades — an armed offshoot of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement — was wounded and arrested, sources on both sides said.
