North Carolina will receive about $54 million from the Department of Homeland Security, part of which will be used to enhance equipment and training for area public safety personnel. Homeland Security Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson said Wednesday the money will go to emergency first responders, such as police, fire and public health departments. The money comes from the State Homeland Security Grant Program and is used for training, equipment, exercises and planning. “I emphasize the importance of the first responders,” said Hutchinson, the undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security. “It’s essential to have the best equipment.” The money was awarded to the state in March, but Hutchinson made a formal announcement in High Point. About 80 percent of the money will go directly to the personnel in the field, Hutchinson said. The money will be funneled through the state’s Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. Full Story
