The federal government plans to ”ratchet up” security through early 2005 based on concerns that terrorists will strike during high-profile political, economic and athletic events, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Monday. Citing last month’s train bombings in Madrid that killed 191 people on the eve of Spain’s elections, ”we must be aggressive,” Ridge said in Las Vegas. The goal is to guard against terrorist attacks timed to coincide with events such as next month’s dedication of a World War II memorial in Washington and this summer’s Democratic and Republican conventions in Boston and New York City.Full Story
