Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has called for Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir to be kept in prison, warning that he would incite more violence if released. The call follows Bashir’s urging from his Indonesian jail for continuing attacks on the United States and its allies. Mr Downer said yesterday that he hoped the courts would continue the imprisonment of the spiritual leader of terrorist group Jemaah Islamiah, despite plans to release him next month. The Supreme Court recently halved Bashir’s conviction on forgery charges to 18 months. The full bench of the court should rule that Bashir not be released, Mr Downer said. “Our view of that is that we join with the Indonesians in hoping that it will be possible, if this is the decision of the judge, to appeal successfully to the full Supreme Court,” he said.
