A message purportedly by al-Qaida vowed to avenge the killing earlier this week of the suspected al-Qaida chief on the Arabian peninsula, a man the group identified Thursday in a statement as a former bodyguard for Osama bin Laden. Khaled Ali Haj, who is from Yemen, and a Saudi accomplice were killed Monday in a shootout with Saudi police in a residential area in Riyadh. A statement, signed by Al-Qaida network in the Arabia Peninsula, said he had been killed while heading out on a “mission,” but did not say what it was. The statement was carried on an Islamic Web site that often has published claims of al-Qaida-related attacks and operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen or Spain.
