Thousands of joyous Haitians took to the streets Monday to celebrate the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and greet a convoy of 150 rebel soldiers as U.S. Marines took up positions at the gleaming National Palace. But the celebrations were accompanied by anger and calls for reprisals against the former president and his top officials as police and other armed groups moved swiftly against militant Aristide supporters. The former president, now in exile in the Central African Republic after being flown out of Port-au-Prince aboard a U.S. jetliner Sunday, accused the U.S. of kidnapping him. Aristide told CNN and The Associated Press on Monday that U.S. troops had engineered a coup in which “I was forced to leave” at gunpoint.
