U.S. forces said on Saturday they had shot dead two men suspected of anti-coalition activities, but Iraqi officials in the northern city of Mosul said the victims were innocent bystanders. In a statement, the U.S. military said soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Division had responded to a drive-by shooting targeting an Iraqi traffic control point near Mosul on Friday night and pursued four assailants traveling in a car and on a motorcycle. “Working with the Iraqi police, the (U.S.) patrol engaged the car, killing two of the assailants. Then the police stopped the motorcycle and detained two suspects who are currently in a Mosul jail,” the statement said. In two subsequent searches in the city, U.S. forces said they detained four more people on suspicion of planning attacks against the coalition and found an improvised explosive device consisting of ball-bearings and plastic explosives.
