In a major blow to Pakistan’s efforts to promote literacy in backward areas, eight girls’ schools in the conservative Northern Areas bordering Afghanistan, were destroyed by serial bombings over the past few days, with authorities blaming them on extremists opposed to liberal education. On the night of February 15, seven girls’ schools under the government’s Social Action Program (SAP) were blown up by explosives in the remote Daarayle Valley. The eighth attack came on February 19 when unidentified people dynamited a primary school in the city of Chilas, 120-kilometers south of the regional headquarters in Gilgit.
