Saudi Arabia said on Friday security forces had raided two hideouts in the capital Riyadh of a group of militants who were planning to carry out an attack. An Interior Ministry statement read out on Saudi state television said police following “a group preparing for a terrorist act” raided two houses on Thursday, seizing explosives, guns and ammunition. The raids took place on the eve of the haj pilgrimage in the Saudi city of Mecca and the same day that seven people, including six policemen, were killed when militants opened fire on them as they searched the house of one of the group members. Saudi Arabia has been fighting a wave of militant violence, blamed on supporters of Saudi-born Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network.
