A leading human rights group yesterday called on the international community to step up pressure on Indonesia to end its seven-month military campaign in the province of Aceh. In a new report detailing the impact of what it called a “secret war”, New York-based Human Rights Watch called for the US, Britain, Japan and other governments to increase pressure on Jakarta to allow humanitarian agencies and independent observers into Aceh. The group also called for “all aid decisions” and World Bank lending to “incorporate dialogues on human rights violations in Aceh”. “Aceh needs to be the top priority in the international community’s dealings with the Indonesian government,” said Brad Adams, executive director of Human Rights Watch’s Asia division.
