A U.N. tribunal convicted and sentenced to life in prison a former Rwanda mayor Monday for his role in the 1994 genocide that killed more than 500,000 people in the tiny central African country. The judge said Juvenal Kajelijeli was “clearly devoted to his evil course” during the genocide, citing an attack at a courthouse in the town of Ruhengeri in which 300 minority Tutsis were killed. The 52-year-old Kajelijeli “played a vital role in the killings” by procuring the weapons used in the attack, said Judge William Sekule at a hearing at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which is hearing cases related to the genocide. The tribunal is located in Arusha, Tanzania. The judge also cited Kajelijeli’s role in orchestrating massacres elsewhere in Rwanda. The Hutu extremist government orchestrated the slaughter of the minority Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus over 100 days.
