Two geeks last week separately violated my electronic privacy. The first used a “crack” in my home computer’s Windows XP operating system to install a malicious programme. Every time I logged onto the Internet, the PC would switch off. That was the Msblast worm. A few days later, I received in excess of 1,200 e-mail items in my inbox at one go. I spent over two hours downloading the e-mails, out of which only five were useful. The rest were repetitive garbage. The Microsoft website identified the glitch as the Sobig bug. The flood kept coming for a couple of days, even after I had “manually” removed the offending virus and updated my virus definitions. Experts are warning us to expect a DDS (distributed denial of service) attack from Sobig. In a DDS attack, targeted websites are swamped with millions of useless inquiries and data, locking out legitimate users and clients. The affected site collapses and shuts down, losing business.
