The Palestinian terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad called off an 8-week truce with Israel on Thursday and threatened ”earthshaking” revenge after Israel killed a Hamas leader in a missile strike. ”The assassination . . . means that the Zionist enemy has assassinated the truce,” said another Hamas leader, Ismail Hanieh, after identifying the decapitated body of Ismail Abu Shanab at a morgue in Gaza City. ”Hamas holds the Zionist enemy fully responsible.” Both groups had already carried out terrorist attacks in past weeks, including a bus bombing Tuesday that killed 20 Israelis, six of whom were children. The violence puts the U.S.-backed ”road map” for peace in jeopardy. The peace plan is intended to forge a Palestinian state in Israeli-occupied Gaza and West Bank territory by 2005.
