A shortfall in prosecutions against cyber-criminals has forced key government agencies to help bring forward national guidelines for the preservation of computer evidence. The Attorney-General’s Department, the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, and the Defence Signals Directorate are some of the agencies backing today’s launch of the guidelines by the country’s premier standards body, Standards Australia. The guidelines preceded a computer forensics standard that could be put into industry legislation, Standards Australia director of business standards Mark Bezzina said. Mr Bezzina said while there were some criminal prosecutions in Australia, there were very few civil cases, mostly due to inadmissable evidence.
