A truck loaded with explosives blew up beside a military hospital in southern Russia this evening, killing at least 35 and wounding dozens. Russian officials immediately blamed Chechen separatists for the bombing, the latest in a wave of suicide attacks that have spread Russia’s war in Chechnya beyond the battered region’s borders. The explosion destroyed the three-story hospital in Mozdok, a town in the region of North Ossetia that has served as a staging base for the Russian military in both of the wars in Chechnya since 1994. The explosion also badly damaged several buildings nearby, including a cardboard factory whose wall collapsed, and flattened a tent camp for soldiers recuperating from wounds incurred in the war. Today’s bombing — the eighth in Russia in less than three months — underscored the deadly increase in terror tactics by guerrillas fighting for Chechen independence. Full Story
