Hutu rebels have released three remaining Hutu parliamentarians of the four they kidnapped in June. Rebels from the Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD) kidnapped the four, members of the Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU) party, and a number of civilians on June 28 at Nyabitare, some 180 kilometres east of the capital Bujumbura. The kidnapping was reportedly an expression of anger at FRODEBU’s participation in the transitional government. FRODEBU’s Domitien Ndayizeye in April succeeded Pierre Buyoya, a Tutsi, as head of the country’s three-year transitional government, set up after a peace deal signed in Arusha, Tanzania in 2000.
