South Africa said Monday its peacekeepers in Burundi would not intervene to fight off rebel attacks that have left more than 200 dead over the past week in some of the worst fighting of the 10-year conflict. Clashes between Hutu rebels and the Tutsi-led army has forced thousands to flee their homes in the lakeside capital of Bujumbura as rebels launched attacks on the city from their bases in the nearby hills. Monday saw a lull in the fighting and a return to something like normality as buses plied their usual routes, electricians worked to repair broken power cables and some people went home, sweeping and cleaning their damaged and looted houses. Many of the dead have been buried, but in some parts of the city residents said bodies were still lying in the streets.
