Thousands of Hindus have begun an annual pilgrimage in Indian-administered Kashmir under the protection of a huge security operation. Last year eight pilgrims were killed and many more wounded in an attack blamed on separatists. Despite an improvement in relations between India and Pakistan in recent months, violence in the territory has continued. The pilgrims’ destination, the Amarnath cave, is one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. Hindus believe the cave is the home of Lord Shiva, the god of destruction.
