The alleged boss of the Real IRA recruited a top gunman capable of murdering Tony Blair, the FBI spy David Rupert told a Dublin court yesterday. Mr Rupert, 51, is the key witness in the case against the alleged leader, Michael McKevitt, 53, from Dundalk, Co Louth, in the Irish Republic, who denies membership of the renegade paramilitary group and directing terrorism. Mr Rupert told the no-jury special criminal court that the defendant, who allegedly formed a new terrorist group with members of various dissident republican factions, had briefed him about two “sleepers” he had placed in the US.
