Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath said Monday he expects militant groups to agree to a cease-fire in attacks against Israel by as soon as Tuesday, media reports said. Shaath was quoted in remarks following a meeting with Euoprean Union officials in Ramallah, as Egyptian generals were mediating a truce among the Palestinian Authority and 13 factions, which would call for all of them to halt terror attacks against Israel. At the same time, Israel Radio reported slow progress being made on Monday afternoon in the meetings underway in Gaza. Hamas spiritual leader Ahmed Yassin is quoted as suggesting to reporters that the group would agree to a cease-fire only if Israel quits its targeted attacks against Palestinians. “Hamas doesn’t want to kill civilians, but works by the Islamic principle of an eye for an eye,” Yassin said.
