Kidnappers are reported to have released four UN staff abducted last week on the border between Georgia and its breakaway province of Abkhazia. Gunmen captured two Germans, a Dane and a Georgian translator working for a UN military observation team in the lawless Kodori Gorge on Thursday. According to Georgia’s Rustavi-2 television, the kidnappers had been demanding $1.5 million in ransom, but released their captives without payment. A senior Georgian official is said to have flown to the area to pick up the UN staff. However, an official in charge of negotiations with the kidnappers refused to confirm that the release had taken place. The Kodori Gorge is a remote part of Abkhazia, some of which technically remains under the control of the Georgian central government. Full Story
