Afghan police said on Monday they had arrested eight militants for shooting at a car belonging to a local demining agency and killing the driver. The eight suspects were arrested at their houses in the Sayed Abad district of Wardak province, where a car belonging to the Afghan Development Agency was shot at on Saturday. Hafizullah, an aide to Wardak’s police chief, said the men belonged to the Hezb-i-Islami faction of renegade warlord Guldbuddin Hekmatyar, who has called for a jihad or holy war against U.S. forces in Afghanistan. “They (eight suspects) are under investigation. They were picked up at their houses, which are close to the main road where the incident took place, and all belong to Hektmayar’s party,” Hafizullah said. He described the shooting as politically motivated and “aimed at trying to destabilize the U.S.-backed government of President Hamid Karzai. Saturday’s shooting was the latest in a spate of attacks in Afghanistan, mostly blamed on the remnants of the hard-line Taliban regime ousted in a U.S.-led war in late 2001.
