The Philippines’ military chief has warned the country should expect terrorist attacks against US and government targets in case of a war against Iraq, adding to broader fears of an economic slowdown because of conflict in the Middle East. Brigadier General Dionisio Santiago, the armed forces chief of staff, said the possibility was “very strong” of violent attacks designed to “make people feel that being sympathetic to the Americans will not work”. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is regarded as one of Washington’s staunchest allies in Asia. She allowed the Philippines to be used as a transit and refuelling point for US warships and aircraft in the invasion of Afghanistan last year.
