A judge unexpectedly delayed the conclusion of the first criminal trial connected to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks today, protesting the government’s refusal to disclose classified information about a potential witness who might help exonerate the defendant. The judge, Albrecht Mentz, said he would issue a formal request to the German government for intelligence information concerning the potential defense witness, Mohamed Heidar Zammar, a suspected Qaeda recruiter and an associate of the defendant, Mounir el-Motassadeq. In a written statement read in court today, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder’s office said that providing information available to German intelligence could damage “trusting cooperation” with foreign services.
