The debate over US technology companies’ aid in constructing the ?Great Firewall of China? was reinvigorated by Google?s announcement that it would provide censored search results to residents of China . The Chinese government uses US-made technology to block content it finds objectionable and to monitor its citizens’ online behavior.

Google detractors, such as Reporters Without Borders, said the launch of Google?s Chinese search engine was “a black day for freedom of expression in China.” Moreover, these detractors derisively remind Google of its corporate pledge ?don?t be evil? and contend that censorship from readily available information elsewhere might well be ananthema. In contrast, Google?s supporters believe that the introduction of the search engine will aid China in its slow march toward democracy. According to Google co-founder Sergey Brin “more information is better, even if it is not as full as we would like to see.”
